So it goes...
I guess I'm coming to the blog party late. It seems its 140 words or less nowadays. But here's my story...I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and now live in the Washington, DC area for about 20 years. Been married for over 10 years and have two children, a daughter who is in elementary school and a son who is almost 2. I'm a librarian who has worked in a variety of special libraries and currently working the short-term assignments though I want to get off that track. I am also a lector at my church, Holy Redeemer in College Park, MD. Life is good.
I'm a believer of planning and research, but also defying the experts. At the age of 2 or 3, I was diagnosed with a learning disability. Understanding of learning disabilities was so new that some specialists thought I was retarded. After a rocky start in elementary where a kindergarten teacher told my mother I was a b!tch (I was quickly pulled out that class, but I love that story), I was placed in special ed. Special ed was not a good experience for me because I could barely read by the end of first year. My parents alarmed by this hired a reading tutor, Miss Claudette, who came twice a week.
I was the star pupil in special ed by second grade. The principal seeing my talents, mainstreamed me for 1 hour a day for reading. My parents and disability advocates began putting forward the possibility of releasing me from special ed and going mainstreamed, however the head of special ed fought it. After many hearings, it was decided I should be mainstreamed and ordered the head to release me. Sensing she lost the battle, the head told my parents it would be no good anyway since chances were high I would drop out of high school.
After being the top 10 of my class in high school, a bachelor of arts degree from American University, and a masters in library science from The Catholic University of America, I am contemplating what I want this blog to be about. It will probably be on a variety of subjects: library/information science, Catholicism, politics, history, etc. But as I began this post, I will end it the same...So it goes...
